Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle, slow and rhythmic face and body treatment, following the pathways of superficial lymphatic vessels.
MLD facilitates the movement of lymphatic fluid from the body’s tissues into the lymphatic vessels, clearing out waste. It also soothes the nervous system; you may experience a calmer mental state and a body relieved of pain. MLD originated in Europe, founded by Emil and Estrid Vodder. Kimmy is certified in the Vodder technique, instructed by Klose training.
CONDITIONS THAT COULD BENEFIT FROM MLD:
▪ Fluid Retention
▪ Post Surgical Swelling
▪ Edema resulting from sprains/muscle injury/sports injuries
▪ Arthritis
▪ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
▪ Multiple Sclerosis
▪ Sinusitis
▪ Cellulite
▪ Aches and pains
▪ Headaches
▪ Tension and Stress
▪ Digestive problems
▪ Assistance with weight loss
YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM AND ITS ROLE IN MAINTAINING OPTIMAL HEALTH.
The Lymphatic System consists of vessels, ducts and nodes and is closely connected to the
cardiovascular system. It is often referred to as an ”internal cleaning system for the whole body." It is vital for the maintenance of human life because if it fails to function correctly, excessive fluids and toxins build up causing the body pain, loss of energy, infection and disease. During the transportation process, lymph fluid is cleaned, concentrated and filtered by the 600-700 lymph nodes located around the body before circulating back to the heart. They also produce a type of white blood cell (lymphocytes) which are vital to immunity.
AN INEFFICIENT LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
If the Lymphatic system is working efficiently, we feel healthy. Low energy, fatigue, bouts of colds and infections could mean that our lymphatic system is weak and struggling to function to its optimum capability. A congested lymphatic system, resulting from buildup of metabolic waste materials, can prevent healthy nutrients from entering the cells in our body.
HOW CAN MLD HELP?
As MLD affects the nervous system, potential positive outcomes include: aiding pain relief, encouraging relaxation, and soothing sore muscles. MLD facilitates fluid movement in the connective tissue by stimulating the lymph vessels, which has a detoxifying effect. This technique may also enhance immune system function.
IS MLD COMPATIBLE WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?
MLD combines very effectively with complementary and orthodox treatments. Gentle cupping is one technique that enhances MLD. My sessions are trauma-informed and if desired, energywork such as Reiki can be included. With clearance from a physician, deep tissue or Swedish/relaxation is another option. I am happy to incorporate these modalities into your session before performing MLD, if requested and indicated.
